INMAN, SC - Mary Veronica (McManimen) Southworth, widow of Dr. Chauncey Robert Southworth, died February 9, 2015 at RoseCrest Lutheran Home, Inman, South Carolina at the age of 92.
Formerly of Sharon, Connecticut, where she lived for 35 years, she was born in Mount Carmel, Pennsylvania in 1922, a daughter of the late Frank and Ellen McManimen.
Truly one of the greatest generation, Mary served as an army nurse during World War II. Traveling to Europe on the Queen Mary she met her future husband. Both were members of the 280th Station Hospital Unit and served together near the front lines in both France and England. The two were married in Cherbourg in 1945. After their service they returned home and settled in Dutchess County, New York.
Always active in her community Mary was involved in numerous organizations: the Dutchess County Medical Auxiliary, Poughkeepsie Junior League, Dutchess County Historical Society and Vassar Brothers Hospital board. After moving to Connecticut she contributed her time and talent to the Sharon Women's Club, Sharon Audubon Society, Sharon Historical Society and the Millbrook Garden Club (GAC).
Mary is survived by one of her 4 sisters, Rose Marie Burns of Harleysville, Pennsylvania, her six children: Rose Marie Southworth, Brooklyn, New York, Diantha Southworth, Wilmington, Delaware, Marjorie Southworth, Boston, Massachusetts, Ginny Southworth, Aiken, South Carolina, Bob Southworth and wife Patty, Glens Falls, New York, Dr. Michael Southworth and wife Maria, Madbury, New Hampshire.
Mary is also survived by her grandchildren: Michael Wilson, Meghan Wilson, Greer Southworth-Purdy, Cooper Southworth-Purdy, Hannah Southworth, Sophie Southworth, Andy Southworth, Chauncey Southworth and Olivia Southworth.
Her children and grandchildren will miss her wonderful spirit. Mary will be buried next to her husband this summer in Dryden, New York.
