Nelson Taber
AIKEN, SC - Nelson Taber, 86, beloved husband of Phyllis (Egert) Taber, died peacefully at his home on February 22, 2017.
Born on September 30, 1930, in Clinton, IA, Nelson was the son of William and Grace Taber. He grew up in Prophetstown, IL, where he was once the King of Kids Day and the starting quarterback for Prophetstown High.
He graduated from the University of Illinois with a degree in civil engineering. After a 35 year career working for the Illinois Department of Transportation and serving as the Henry County Superintendent of Highways in Cambridge, IL, he retired in 1987. In 1995, he and Phyllis moved to Aiken, where they have resided for the past 22 years.
Nelson was a passionate golfer until health issues in his later years kept him off the course. His neighbors will long remember his annual hot dog block party and the nightly get together for "children's hour".
Nelson is survived by his wife, Phyllis, and his sons William and Susan Taber of Upland, CA, Rex and Sandy Taber of Summerville, SC, and Nels and Michele Taber of Camp Hill, PA, and several grandchildren and step-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents and his sisters, Juanita Woolums and Lois Kiner.
Nelson eschewed ceremony and in honor of his wishes, there will be no viewing or funeral services. Those who knew him should express their condolences to Phyllis and raise a glass in memory of a man who was a hero to his sons and who touched the hearts of many friends over the course of his life. He was a kind and generous man who will be missed by all who knew him.
If desired, memorials in memory of Nelson may be made to SPCA of Aiken or Salvation Army of Aiken.
