Oscar Alwynne Towler, Jr.
BRENTWOOD, Tenn. - Oscar Alwynne Towler, Jr., of Brentwood, TN passed away Tuesday, February 22, 2017, at the age of 95. He was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Emilie Amlund Towler, and his brother, Robert U. Towler. Oscar is survived by his children Marianne Towler of Tallahassee, FL; Ellen Towler of Lyman, SC; Kimberly Towler of Honolulu, HI; Chip Towler (Bee) of Port Royal, VA; Carole Burgess (Chuck) of Nashville, TN; and grandchildren Jerry, Will, and Callie Towler and Kyle, Van, and Claire Burgess.
Oscar earned his undergraduate degree in physics at Iowa State University where he received honors as the top mathematics student. He served in the U.S. Navy at the Brooklyn Navy Yard during the World War II, then earned his PhD in nuclear physics at the University of Rochester (NY). He worked as a nuclear physicist at DuPont's Savannah River Plant in Aiken, SC for 33 years. Oscar performed as an oboist with the Augusta (GA) Symphony Orchestra with Emilie joining him as a violinist. He was a long-time member of St. John's UMC in Aiken and was the church organist. He was active with The Church of The Good Shepherd in Cashiers and also with Brentwood UMC. He very much enjoyed his mountain house, Troll Top, in Cashiers, NC and his beach retreat in Hilton Head, SC. He also loved square dancing, bridge, music of all kinds, his world travels with Emilie and teaching math at the University of South Carolina at Aiken. His last residence was at The Heritage in Brentwood.
Services were at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, February 25th, at the Brentwood UMC Chapel, with visitation that started at 9:30 a.m.
