Ridge Spring - Philip "Buck" Austin Hartley, 85, passed away at his home, Sunday, May 4, 2014. Per Philip's final request his body will be cremated. Graveside services with military honors will be held on Saturday, May 10, 2014 at 11:30 A.M. at the Hartley Family Cemetery on Kneece Mill Road, Batesburg conducted by Rev. Joshua Davison.
Philip was born in Batesburg, SC to the late Charlie and Clara Mae Oswalt-Hartley. He was a graduate of Ridge Spring- Monetta High School. After graduation at the age of 17 with the permission of his mother, he joined the United States Army, where he proudly served 20 years. Philip also retired from Kimberly-Clarke. Philip loved his family and spending time with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Philip is survived by his daughter, Patricia (James) Messar; grandson, Erich Messar; daughter, Kathy Pace (Ricky Arrington); grandson, Michael Pace (Dawn Sterling); great-grandchildren, Lexi Sterling; Jay Sterling; Maryann Sterling; Caroline Pace; daughter, Christine (Arnold) Bailey; grandson, Brandon Bailey (Stephanie Stevens); great-grandchildren, Haley Bailey; Jason Seago, Ashely Stevens; grandson, Ben (Barbara) Bailey; great- granddaughter, Makayla Bailey; granddaughter, Tracy (John) Frazier; great grandson, Luke Frazier; daughter-in-law, Deborah Hartley-Carver (Allen); grandson, John Travis Hartley (Jessica); great-grandchildren, Chey-enne Hartley; Montana Hartley; Dakota Hartley; grandsons, Preston Hartley and David Chalker Hartley; brother-in-law, Jim Williams; sister-in-law, Mary (Steve) Horton; sister-in-law, Barbara Leedy; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife of 62 years, Gloria Hartley; son, Jerry Philip Hartley; brothers, Lewie Hartley (Hortense); Sidney Hartley (Polly); John Hartley; sisters, Ella Mae Durst (Broadus); and Evelyn Williams.
