Robert W. "Bob" Tanner
AIKEN, SC - Mr. Robert W. "Bob" Tanner, 83, loving and devoted husband of nearly sixty-one years to Mrs. Madeline Hammer Tanner, went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, on Monday, August 10th, 2015, in the comfort of his home.
Born in and a resident of Winnsboro, SC until his induction into the United States Army in 1948, he was a son of the late Hassie J. and Thelma Mincey Tanner. A Korean War Veteran, he proudly served in the Tank Corps Fourth Regimental Combat Team. For his honorable service, he was awarded the Good Conduct Medal. Following his honorable discharge from the United States Army in 1953, where he earned the rank of Sergeant, he began his career with E.I. DuPont, retiring in 1989 as First Line Supervisor in the E and I Department.
A devout servant of God, he was a very active member of Midland Valley Community Church of the Nazarene, where he served as Head Usher and was a member of the Care Givers Sunday School Class. He enjoyed playing golf and was a train enthusiast. However more than anything, he enjoyed spending time with his family who, he was affectionately known as "PaPa" and was known by his devoted wife as "Shg".
In addition to his wife and parents, family members include daughters, Debbie Tanner Martin and her husband, Bill, Aiken, SC, Kim Tanner McCormick and her husband, Tom, Waxhaw, NC and Robin Tanner Hughes, Aiken, SC; son, Robert Tanner, Jr. and his wife Melissa, North Augusta, SC; siblings, Marvin Tanner and his wife, Rachel, Graniteville, SC, the late Kenneth Tanner, the late Charlotte Kelly and the late Libby Blake, grandchildren, Trey Martin, Daniel E. Martin, Adam Joseph "Jo-Jo" Martin, Kyle Hughes, Taylor Williams and her husband, Zach and Brayden Tanner and a precious four year old great-granddaughter, Kaelin Hughes.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Thursday, August 13th, 2015, at 2 o'clock at Midland Valley Community Church of the Nazarene, Langley, SC, with Pastor Kyle Poole and Pastor John Faircloth officiating.
Mr. Tanner will be escorted by members of the Patriot Guard to his final resting place, Aiken Memorial Gardens, Aiken, SC. Pallbearers will be Jerry Carter, Robbie Duncan, Mike Merriett, David Goodwin, Donald Simons, Maurice Birghtharp and James Cosnahan. Members of the Care Givers Sunday School Class, as well as members of the Copen Sunday School Class will serve as Honorary Pallbearers.
If so desired, memorials may be made to the Midland Valley Community Church of the Nazarene. (
