Ruby Mazie Pope Walker
Palm Bay, FL - Mazie Walker, 90, formerly of Macon, GA, went to her heavenly home on April 24, 2014. Over the years, she was an active member of Mabel White Baptist Church, Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Midway Baptist Church, Stratford Knoll Chapel and Tattnall Square Baptist Church. She was a great promoter of home and foreign missions and led many mission studies in Macon area churches. She was the associational and state Women's Missionary Union president for several years. In 1960 she was Georgia Homemaker of the Year for the 6th District in the UGA Extension Program. For over 35 years she taught adults to read using the Laubach method. She became known as Middle Georgia's "Mother of Literacy." Macon's Project Read gave the "Mazie Walker Award" to an outstanding adult literacy volunteer.
She was preceded in death by her husband Charlie A. Walker and her daughter Melissa Smith. Survivors: son Charles Walker, Jr., Raleigh, NC; daughter Christie Pilcher, Macon, GA; daughter Mary Thomas, Aiken, SC; and son David Walker (Annette), Palm Bay, FL; grandchildren: Andy Pilcher (Heidi), Kennesaw, GA; Clay Pilcher (Amy), Smyrna, GA; Charles and Jonathan Thomas, Edgefield, SC; Robert and Brittany Smith, LaGrange, GA; Sarah Walker, Melbourne, FL; Susannah Walker, San Diego, CA; Emily and Daniel Walker, Palm Bay, FL; and great-grandchildren: Reily, Alyssa and Rhett Pilcher, Kennesaw, GA.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, May 17, 2014, at 1 p.m. at Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Macon, GA.
