Shellie Newell
GRANITEVILLE - On January 9, 2018, Shellie Theresa Newell, of Graniteville, SC, passed away unexpectedly after an injury suffered from a fall at her home.
Bubbly, optimistic and outgoing, Shellie was the type of person who never met a stranger. Her beloved family and friends will miss her warm, fun loving spirit and her service to the community.
Before graduating as a Journalism Major, Shellie took a geology course at the University of South Carolina that inspired a lifelong passion for science and the natural world. After working in television production for a few years, she took her savings and walked with the Hikanation Group from California to Delaware. Sponsored by Backpacker Magazine and the National Park Service, the trip fostered conservation and interest in hiking among local, state and regional groups.
Later, Shellie became the Publication Editor of the prestigious "Kidney International Journal", worked with researchers from every continent, and traveled the world for conferences and meetings.
She moved to Graniteville to support her mother and was self-employed in her own business, Greystone Editing, working with science textbooks and journal publication on topics as varied as nursing, biochemistry, anatomy, physiology and forensic crime. For fun, she took dancing lessons, competed, and traveled with friends at Ballroom in Motion.
Shellie also pursued her passion for geology as a member and leader of the Aiken Gem and Mineral and Fossil Society, serving several terms as president and many years as a newsletter Editor. Her articles and newsletters won many regional and national awards. Shellie was also a member of the Augusta and Columbia clubs.
The daughter of Miriam and Chester Newell, Shellie is survived by her twin sister, Sharon Miller and her sister, Dr. Vickie Newell. Other family members include Marvin, Marlane and Meredith Miller, the Schindler family of Titusville, Florida, the Wolstenholme family of Tampa, Florida and Seattle, Washington and Wolstenholme family of Sarasota, Florida.
A memorial gathering will be held on Saturday, January 13, 2018, from 4 until 6 o'clock at Hatcher Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 3464 Jefferson Davis Hwy., Graniteville, SC.
In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Aiken Gem and Mineral and Fossil Society. (
