Shirley Gosnell Holgate
NORTH AUGUSTA, SC - Funeral Services for Mrs. Shirley Gosnell Holgate, 81, who entered into rest February 11, 2015, will be conducted Saturday morning at 11 o'clock from Grace United Methodist Church. Rev. James D. Dennis, Jr., and Dr. John M. Younginer, Jr., officiating. Interment in Pineview Memorial Gardens.
Mrs. Holgate was a native of Campobello, South Carolina, having made North Augusta her home for the past 59 years. She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, the Nancy Smith Circle, United Methodist Women and served as the travel coordinator for METTS. Mrs. Holgate was a graduate of Winthrop College where she was a James F. Byrnes Scholar. She retired as a teacher in Aiken County with 25 years of service and was instrumental in developing the SOAR program. Mrs. Holgate enjoyed travel and loved North Augusta History. She was a member of the North Augusta Centennial Committee, served as the long-time Historian with the North Augusta Arts and Heritage Council, and was instrumental in developing the State Heritage Corridor. In 2007 the Holgates were honored as North Augusta Citizens of the Year.
Survivors include her husband of 57 years, E.J. Holgate; three sons and daughters-in-law, Todd Holgate, Evans, GA, Eric and Carolyn Holgate, North Augusta, SC and Jay and Kim Holgate, Cumming, GA; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren
Pallbearers will be Chandler Holgate, Kenneth Holgate, Don Miller, Carey Miller, Steve McLemore and Chris Withers.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home this Friday evening from 5 until 7.
Memorial may be made the Grace United Methodist Church Building Fund or to the United Methodist Women, 639 Georgia Ave, North Augusta, SC 29841.
