SPARTANBURG, SC - Thomas R. Nelms, 87, formerly of North Augusta, died on February 2, 2016 in Spartanburg, SC after a battle with mesothelioma caused by asbestos exposure during his military service. Graveside Services will be conducted Friday morning at 11 o'clock in Fort Jackson National Cemetery, with full veteran's honors. Rev. Laura-Lee Jones officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home this Thursday evening from 7 until 9.
Born April 19, 1928 in Ochlocknee, Georgia, he was the son of the late Oscar and Myrtice Nelms. Tom joined the US Navy in 1950 and proudly served for 21 years, 12 of which were aboard Destroyers. His final duty station was as a recruiter in Augusta, Ga. During his service, Tom earned six Navy Good Conduct Medals, the Navy Expeditionary Medal, the Navy Occupation Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, and the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal. After retirement, he spent another 21 years of distinguished service as the warehouse manager for ARA Services in North Augusta.
Left to cherish fond memories are a daughter, Lisa Murphy (Keith) of Spartanburg, SC, a son, Alan Nelms (Beth) of North Augusta; four grandchildren, Amy and Kate Murphy of Spartanburg and Chris and Charles Nelms of North Augusta; four brothers, Ralph Nelms of Jacksonville, NC, Cecil Nelms of Cairo, GA, Carol Nelms (Peggy) of Meigs, GA, and Marlon Nelms of Hernando, FL; two sisters, Greta Sikes and Wanda Baumgardner (Jerry) of Columbia, SC, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Matthew Murphy, and by two sisters, Frances Marcus and Yvonne Tart.
The family wishes to express their appreciation to Summit Hills Skilled Nursing and Hospice of the Carolina Foothills for their attentive, loving care of Tom during his illness and to special friends Doug and Joanne Roebuck and Mildred Krause for their devotion and loyalty.
