AIKEN - A celebration of life service for Thomas Oberton Smith, III, 77, of Aiken, SC will be held 2 p.m., Tuesday, February 20, 2018 at Living Hope Fellowship 2550 Old Dominion Road, Aiken, S.C. 29803 with Reverend Dexter Lambert officiating. The family will receive friends from 12:30 p.m. until the time of service at the church on Tuesday. Honorary pallbearers will be Members of the Gideons International Aiken West Camp. Memorials may be sent to the Gideons International, P.O. Box 2623, Aiken, SC 29802. Tom passed away on Friday, February 16, 2018.
Born in Birmingham, Alabama he was the son of the late Thomas Oberton Smith, Jr. and Evelyn Pope Smith. He was a graduate of Shelby County High School, in Alabama, class of 1957; received his Bachler of Science Degree at Samford University and his Master's Degree at Duke University. He served in the U.S. Army National Guard and the U.S. Army Reserve where he achieved the rank of Captain. At the age of 13 he earned his Eagle Scout Badge, and later became a member of Order of the Arrow. He served as Scout Master in Arkansas and Georgia. Tom was a Forest Ranger for several National Forest across the Southeast. He was assistant manager for the U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service Savannah River. He was very passionate about the Gideon Bible Program and has served as a Gideon since 1984, he was church ministry chairman for the Aiken County West Gideon Camp. He is a member of Living Hope Fellowship where he served as a Deacon.
Survivors include his loving wife of 50 years, Carolyn M. Smith; his daughter, Judith Smith (Atsushi) Saburi; grandchildren, Tomutoshi "Tom" Saburi and Kimie Evelyn Saburi; brother-in-law, David Murphy; sister-in-law, Sandra M. Owens.
He was preceded in death by daughter, Sandra Gail Smith.
