Aiken - A celebration of life service for Lt. Colonel Vernon Lee Gomes, U.S Air Force retired, age 90, will be held 2:00 pm Saturday, April 19, 2014 at Grace Covenant Church of God, New Ellenton with Rev. Edgar Foster, Sr. officiating. Full military honors will be accorded by the U.S. Air Force Ceremonial team. Interment will be private.
Lt. Col. Gomes was the beloved husband for 64 years of Mrs. Martha Yates Gomes and son of the late Mr. George Gomes and the late Mrs. Gertrude Bedbury Gomes. He was a native of Clayton, CA, and had made Aiken his home for the past three years moving from Washington State. He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict retiring after 20 years of service with the rank of Lt. Colonel in the U.S. Air Force. Lt. Col. Gomes enjoyed fly fishing in his spare time. When he and his wife relocated to the Aiken area they made their home at Shadow Oaks assisted living where he attended the weekly chapel services. He also attended Grace Covenant Church of God in New Ellenton.
Additional survivors in-clude two sons, Gary (Mari) Gomes, Federal Way, Washington State, Glenn Gomes, Bainbridge Island, Washington, State; one daughter, Christy (Scott) Douglas, Aiken; eight grandchildren, Maria, Meg, Sam, Kate, Ben, Betsy Douglas, Jimmy Gomes, and Jackie Brasefield; one great-grandchild, Max Brase-field. Mr. Gomes was predeceased by one brother, Kenneth Gomes.
