Mr. Wilbur Whitman "Rooster"
North Augusta - Mr. Wilbur "Rooster" Whitman, 79, of Ambassador Drive, North Augusta, entered into rest on Saturday, August 19, 2017 at his residence. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mrs. Laura Metts Whitman and a son-in -law, Mr. Brian Ansley.
Mr. Whitman was born in Augusta, Georgia to the late Curtis Wilbur Whitman, Sr. and Grace Kinard Whitman. He was a U.S Navy Veteran and served both in the Merchant Marines and the National Guard. He retired in 2001 as a pipefitter and welder working on off shore oil riggs and a member of the Local 150 (Pipefitters and Welders) Union. He was a member of American Legion Post #63, #205 and #178 and the Voiture Nationale 40/8. Wilbur was a member of the Augusta International Raceway and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2016. In the 1950's and 60's, he drove the #8 "Eight Ball" in Short Track Racing and he was the Georgia State Champion in 1963.
Surviving are daughters: Debbie Smith (Terry), North Augusta, Leslie Ansley (David Craddock), Beech Island and Lisa Proctor (Jeff), North Augusta; grandchildren: Curtis Smith (Stephanie), North, SC, Amanda Smith Keltz (Mike), Graniteville, Nicole Owens Burke (David), North Augusta and Michelle Owens, North Augusta and great grandchildren: Whitman, Gracelynn and Weston Keltz and Chesnee and Connor Burke and his fur babies, Baby Doll, Bo Bo, Mollie and Stanley.
A Celebration of Life will be at noon Tuesday in the Hatcher Funeral Chapel with Rev. Don McKenzie officiating. Interment will follow in Westover Memorial Park, Augusta, GA.
Pallbearers will be Steve Walton, Curtis Smith, Josh Earhart, Clay Herring, Lamar Proctor and Jerry Montgomery. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Augusta International Speedway and the Swamp and Hill Hunting Club.
