Alan Corey Obituary

Alan Lyle Corey III
AIKEN, SC - MR. ALAN LYLE COREY III DIES AT AGE 73 DOING WHAT HE LOVED THE MOST.
The polo world lost one of its most dedicated and esteemed members on the afternoon of April 3.
He had been playing the first practice game of the year in Aiken, South Carolina, where he collapsed of an apparent heart attack.
Alan, son of the late Alan Lyle Corey, Jr. and Patricia Grace Corey, was a long time Aiken resident.
He was from a distinguished polo family; his father was a legendary 9-goal player who was inducted into the Polo Hall of Fame in 1992.
He grew up playing polo in Long Island and Aiken and was a member of the intercollegiate polo team while he was a student at Yale.
He graduated from Yale in 1965 and went on to be an Equity Trader on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange where he was a member for approximately 26 years.
Alan and his wife, Patricia Ellis Corey, moved to Aiken, South Carolina full time in the 1980s.
There Alan became indispensable to the Aiken Polo Club where he played and served on the Board of Directors until the day he died.
He is remembered by his colleagues as a True Visionary and for helping to keep polo alive.
Last year he fulfilled part of his dream to perpetuate and preserve the playing of polo by being the driving force behind the construction of a pavilion on the Whitney Polo Field, where polo has been played for 133 years.
He stated at the time he wanted to ensure that polo remained part of the Aiken Community for generations to come.
The pavilion was honored by the Historic Aiken Foundation by being granted The Historic Aiken Leadership Award.
In addition to working closely with the Aiken Polo Club, Corey served as one of the Whitney Trustees who oversee Whitney Field and other historic sports related properties in Aiken, such as the Palmetto Golf Club and the Aiken Court Tennis Club.
Corey was a long-standing member of both clubs as well. He died before he could fulfill the other part of his dream, which was to complete a memento brick campaign to construct a brick floor at the Pavilion, the funds from which were to be the foundation of a legacy for Aiken Polo and The Whitney Trustees.
He is survived by his wife, Patricia Ellis Corey; two daughters, Christine (Damon) Corey, Olympia, WA, Cynthia Corey (Joseph) Dolezal; two sons, Alan Lyle Corey, IV, Great Neck, NY, Robert William (Rachel) Corey, East Hills, NY; step sons, James Thomas (Melissa) Raezer, Greenwich, CT, Geoffrey Alan (Shannon) Ellis, Aiken; grandchildren, Cybelle Elena Corey, Joseph Francis Dolezal, V, Violet Grace Corey, Elizabeth Ellis Raezer, Alexander Mackintosh Raezer, Amanda Hedley Raezer and Grace Victoria Ellis; sister, Patricia Corey Montgomerie, New York, NY; brother, William Russell Corey, Delray Beach, FL.
In lieu of flowers, the family would like contributions to be sent to the brick campaign by sending donations to "Aiken Polo Club Brick Campaign" at Aiken Polo Club, P. O. Box 3021, Aiken, S.C,. 29801 or memento bricks can be purchased online: www.aikenpoloclub.org.
A celebration of life is planned for Saturday, May 16, at 1 pm at the Whitney Polo Field Pavilion.

I am so glad that I had the opportunity to meet, talk and hear Alan sing. It is very difficulty to imagine that you will not be at the APC's events in the future. RIP, and know that you will surely be missed.
