Alice Lucretia Alexander Obituary
Alice Lucretia Alexander, a sweet, twinkling soul, died peacefully on May 25 at her residence in Phoenix, AZ. She was 102-years-old.
Alice, the fourth of nine children, was born on April 26, 1912 in Oto, IA, to Arthur and Rickie Wise. She graduated from Oto High School, and was an eager, outstanding student. After graduation, Alice's sense of adventure and a love of travel led her to California where she would spend the majority of her adult life.
Alice relayed stories to the family of how scarce jobs were when she first arrived in California. Fortunately, through a chance meeting at a dinner party with a woman who happened to be a manager with Mountain Bell, Alice was offered an interview and subsequently hired by that company. She started as a phone operator and was promoted to the engineering department, working for that company in San Francisco and Chico for many years until she retired. After retirement from Bell, she chose a second career serving as a companion to elderly citizens needing assistance.
A dedicated and enthusiastic seamstress, artisan and crafter, Alice loved creative projects, her family members always being amused and delighted when her clever, hand-made cards arrived in the mail - usually collages of pictures thoughtfully selected and clipped from newspapers and magazines, embellished with construction paper, stickers, buttons and bits of ribbon. Alice's favorite of her own creations were two paint-by-number pictures that were so meticulously crafted they earned her a prize in a local art competition. She attended craft classes at her assisted living center on a regular basis.
In 2005, Alice sold her California home and moved to Phoenix to be close to her sisters, Edna Wise Barcal and Betty Wise Guida, and their families. She was a fun- loving participant during holidays and family events and she frequently expressed how much she loved the sound and commotion of young children playing together.
Alice was loving single mother to her one child, Curtis, who died in 2000 after an illness. She was also proceeded in death by her parents, sisters Ethel and Edna, and brothers, Harold, Bill, Wayne and Art.
She is survived by a sister, Myrtle, of Hartley, IA, a sister, Betty and husband Arthur Guida of Payson, AZ, a sister-in-law, Iola Wise, of Akron Colorado, and a host of nieces and nephews and their families.  Alice's niece, Barbara Barber, was extremely supportive and helpful to Alice during Alice's last years on earth and dedicated countless hours to  her care.
Alice's easy smile, gentle heart and keen good humor will be missed by all who knew her. A memorial service was held at Grimshaw Mortuary at 710 W. Bethany Home Road , Phoenix,AZ 85013 on May 31 at 9:30 a.m., and .interment will be at the Akron Cemetery in Akron, CO following a memorial in that location. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Arizona Family Hospice, 10505 N 69th St., Ste 300, Scottsdale, AZ 85253.
