Elvin Dale Ross Obituary
Elvin Dale Ross, 74, passed away October 3, 2014 at home with his family and dog, Chico, by his side.
Elvin Dale Ross was born May 4, 1940 in Logan, Kansas to Harley and Velma (Brown) Ross; he was the fourth of five children. When Elvin was ten years old, the family moved to Codwell, Idaho. In 1958 he joined the Army until 1961; when he returned to Akron and lived with his older sister, Veda Kraich and family. He was working at Fassler Equipment as a parts man, when he met Beverly Couch and they were married in 1963. Soon after, they moved northeast of Akron to the Couch family farm.
While living there, their son, Dwight, was born and three years later, their daughter, Colleen, was born. The family made a couple of more moves, Fleming and Sterling, and Elvin worked farming, oil rigs and carpentry, before settling in Merino and he started driving truck for Eastman Bros. and then for C. J. Frank hauling grain. Elvin then purchased his own truck and leased out to Louseberg Grain and Feed in Sterling until 1979. Elvin's most memorable (and scariest) time while driving truck was when Beverly got her CDL and would drive for Louseberg's when they needed two loads taken together.
In 1980, they returned to Akron and bought a cafe; which they named The Branding Iron. Before opening, Elvin had local farmers and ranchers bring their branding irons in and brand the walls. For the next 23 years, Elvin and Beverly enjoyed working with many young people (several being their first job) and serving the community. After closing in 2002, Elvin drove truck again for Nestor Trucking, Terry Keim and finally Aulick's, hauling sugar beets. Elvin's health made it hard to do much, but he did enjoy spending time with his wife, Beverly, of 51 years and playing ball with his little dog, Chico. Beverly would like to thank all former employees for 23 years of fun and hard work.
Elvin is preceded in death by his parents, Harley and Velma Ross; brother Wayne Ross; sister, Veda Kraich; and nephew, Gordon Ross. He is survived by his wife, Beverly Ross; daughter, Colleen Ross, both of Akron; son, Dwight Ross of Wellington; brother Harvey and Sue Ross of Springfield, Missouri; sister Lois McKinley of Olathe, Kansas; brother-in-law, Ron Kraich Sr. of Akron; sister-in-law, Jill Ross of Los Angeles, brother-in-law, Ray Couch and Karen of Akron; and many nieces and nephews.
