Helen Frances (Hurst) Darrell Obituary
Helen Frances Hurst Darrell, 95, passed away June 30, 2016 at Devonshire Acres in Sterling, Colorado. Helen, daughter of Jessie and Nona Hurst, was born January l,1921, in La Junta, Colorado, the oldest of five children.
Helen graduated from high school in La Junta in 1939. She married Charles Taullie and helped raise his two children, Jerri Ann and Pete. Charles passed away January 27, 1956.
Helen later moved to Denver and worked for several companies; among them Montgomery Ward, J.J. Newberry, A.G. Grocery, DU Student Center, and Continental Airlines. There she met Roy Darrell and they were married on July 5, 1963. Helen became step mother to Roy's four boys, Ronald, Thomas, Robert, and James Edward.
One very memorable event that happened while living in Denver was losing their home in the flood of 1965.
Helen and Roy enjoyed 46 years together before Roy passed on December 5, 2009. They loved camping, hunting, fishing and traveling around in their motor home. You rarely saw one of them without the other, they were a true twosome. They moved from Denver to Akron, Colorado in 1977 where they built a home. Helen and Roy both worked for Washington County for a number of years before retiring. Their retirement years were spent gardening, traveling, visiting family, and seeing friends at the coffee shop.
After Roy passed, Helen stayed in their Akron home for a while. She still loved the outdoors and could often be seen sitting outside enjoying the day. She moved to Bee Hive Assisted Living, Sterling, CO, in April 20l2. She suffered a broken femur in June and after being released from the hospital, moved to Devonshire Acres in July, 2012.
Helen was preceded in death by her parents; husbands Charles Taullie and Roy Darrell; sister Marie Hurst; brothers Ron and Dale Hurst; step-son Pete Taullie, and four nephews.
She is survived by brother, Jerry Hurst and his wife, Sharlyn; sisters-in-law, Margaret and Gwen; and her step children, Jerri Ann Rumsey, Ron Darrell, Thomas Darrell, Robert Darrell and James Edward Darrell and their families.
Services were held at 10:30 a.m., July 5, 2016 at Bowin Funeral Home in Akron, CO.
Helen's ashes will be combined with Roy's and will be inurned at the Akron Cemetery following the services. Memorial donations may be made to the .
