Helen Maxine Bertram Sherman Sonnenberg, 89, passed from this life to her eternal home, Friday, June 5, 2015, after a short illness, at the Brookdale Roslyn Living Center, in Denver, Colorado.
Helen Maxine Bertram was born March 25, 1926, in Greensburg, Kansas, to John Frederick Peter & Josie Cordelia Wagonner Bertram. She was the youngest and only girl of four children. Helen attended school in Greensburg, Kansas and graduated from Greensburg High School, with the class of 1944. She went on to work in the Delco Remy Factory, winding heavy duty artillery, and later worked in a large department store in Florida, staying with her brother, Donald Bertram.
Soon, Helen returned to Greensburg, Kansas, working as a waitress, when her life dream started to unfold. Herbert Sherman walked into the cafŽ and into her life. She said she always wanted to marry a man in uniform and here he was, in his Air Force uniform. She fell in love and Herbert Delorn Sherman and Helen Maxine Bertram, were married June 1, 1945 by a Justice of the Peace, in Greensburg, Kansas. To this union, six children were born, Terry Lee, Gregory Allen, Dolores Elizabeth, Ronald Delorn, Herbert Dee and Deborah Sue.
Helen followed Herb to Porterville, California, where he was stationed, she worked stomping grapes for a wine company and their first son, Terry was born. They moved back to Colorado and were involved in building roads throughout the state. Eventually, they started farming with HerbÕs dad, Herbert B. Sherman. Helen helped by doing the bookwork and during harvest, especially, fixing meals for everyone helping out in the field. Herb and Helen were married 34 years at the time of HerbÕs death, in 1980.
Helen met Richard Sonnenberg through her daughter, Dolores, and on June 4, 1982.; they exchanged marriage vows in the home of her son, Ronald and his wife, Kathleen. They were married for 27 years at the time of his death in 2010.
Helen continued to live in their home in Sterling, Colorado, until December, 2014. When she became very weak, due to health problems, she moved to Valley View Villa Nursing Home in Fort Morgan, until March 2015, at which time she moved to Brookdale Roslyn Living Center in Denver, Colorado, where she would be closer to her son, Ronald and her daughter, Deborah.
Helen celebrated her 89th birthday at Brookdale in March 2015, with many family and friends in attendance. She enjoyed life at Brookdale, participating and winning, BINGO and enjoyed other activities until her illness, a week before her death.
Helen was active in the Pink Lady Auxiliary at Sterling, Colorado Regional MedCenter. She was very involved in the running of the family farm and loved living on the farm. She loved to sew for her children and grandchildren and made many outfits for them. She also enjoyed knitting, crocheting, needlepoint, reading, crossword puzzles, collecting Norman Rockwell figurines and cheering for the Denver Broncos and the Colorado Rockies.
Helen was very involved in her church activities at Bethel Union Church at Anton, Colorado and later in the Sterling First Presbyterian Church, where she became an Ordained Deacon. This meant a great deal to her. Helen loved her Lord and Savior and many times could be found reading her Bible or praying on her knees in the bedroom, any time of the day.
Helen was preceded in death by husbands, Herbert Delorn Sherman and Richard Sonnenberg, her parents, John Frederick Peter Bertram and Josie Cordelia Wagonner Bertram, her three brothers, Howard Bertram, Carl Bertram and Donald Bertram, daughter-in-law, Kathleen Marie Sherman and grandson, Jeffrey Scott Sherman.
Helen, Mom, Grammy, Grandma, Friend, will be sadly missed by Terry & Charlotte Sherman of Anton, Colorado, Gregory & Nola Sherman of Visalia, California, Dee Ham of Laguna Beach, California, Ronald & Sally Sherman of Thornton, Colorado, Herbert & Jackie Sherman of Dickinson, North Dakota, Deborah Sherman-Hoefler & Dr. Robert Paxton, of Denver, Colorado, Richard & Sandy Sonnenberg of Texas, & John & Sue Sonnenberg of Sterling, Colorado, 25 grandchildren and 45 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held, June 13, 2015 at 2 P.M., at the Sterling First Presbyterian Church. Internment followed at the Akron Cemetery, Akron, Colorado. Pallbearers, Grandsons: Kerry Sherman, John Sherman, Matthew Sherman, Nicholas Ham, Andrew Hoefler, Tyler Sherman & remembered grandson, Jeffrey Sherman. Honorary Pallbearers, Granddaughters: Angela Wells, Cynthia Bitts, Randia Laga, Michelle Staley, Jennifer Bradshaw, Ashley McClain, Tanja Pachner, Tanisha Forry, Miranda Sherman & Deidre Hoefler.
Helen, will be remembered for her zeal for life and loving, compassionate soul. She will be missed!
