James Alfred ""Jim"" McGinley Jr. Obituary
James Alfred McGinley Jr. was the only child born to his parents, Edyth Virginia (Shaver) & James Alfred McGinley Sr. on March 15, 1931 in Colorado Springs, CO. They moved to Burlington, CO where his father worked in a grain elevator and his mother was a school teacher. At age two, they moved to Wheeler, KS where his father accepted a management position with a grain elevator and his mother continued teaching school.
In the late forties, he attended community college in McCook, NE where he met Mary Margaret Jaeger. They were married on November 11, 1950 in McCook, NE. In 1952, Jim was offered a job by Dick Uhlenhopp to work at the Akron Super Market. After accepting the position, Jim, Margaret and their first born son Mike, moved to Akron. In 1962, Jim became the manager of the Akron Super Market and Jim and Margaret had three more children, Lynn, Tim and Susan. Jim managed the grocery store until it closed in 1988, over 36 years. From 1988-1998, Jim's second career was as a dispatcher at the Washington County Sheriff's office.
Jim always felt a strong need to volunteer and give back to the community.
From 1970-1980, Jim and Margaret volunteered their time to the Akron Teen Center. During this era, their children attended the high school and they felt the teens in the community needed a place they could go, with adult supervision, to have some fun. Margaret booked dozen of bands over the years to come and play and teens from all over the county would attend these dances. They asked other parents to volunteer their time to sponsor these events which worked well during this time. After their children graduated, they felt it was time to pass the torch to others in the community & eventually the flame blew out on the teen center.
In 1975, Jim joined the Akron Lions Club where his passion to volunteer was a great outlet. With over 40 years of service to this organization; assisting with pancake suppers, fair booths, raffles, air shows, Easter egg hunts, flag pole duty, pheasant hunting, etc., Jim excelled in giving back to his community.
For his service he received numerous awards during this period which included a Lion's Humanitarian Award and the Melvin Jones Fellowship. Jim was extremely proud to be a member of the Akron's Lion Club and was always recruiting new members.
Jim was also on the Akron Library Board for 17 years. From 2013-2016, Jim volunteered at the Akron Nursing Home calling Bingo 2-3 times a week. He enjoyed staying active and being involved in the community.

During the summer of 2016, Jim moved to the Ebenezer Lutheran Care Center in Brush, CO. Jim had a brief illness prior to his passing on April 22, 2017 where he resided at the St. Paul Health Center in Denver, CO with hospice care.
Jim was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Margaret McGinley, on September 12, 2012.
Surviving family members include his four children and their spouses, Mike and his wife Rosemarie, Lynn, Tim and his wife Pam, and Susan and her husband Leo. He had six granddaughters, Stephanie, Candice, Ashley, Sara, Erin and Andrea and one grandson, Eric; one great-granddaughter, Quinn and three great-grandsons, Connor, RJ and Ryker.
Memorial services will be held Saturday, May 20th, at 11:00 a.m. at the Methodist Church in Akron, CO. Any donations or cards on Jim's behalf can be made to Akron Lions Club and mailed to Lynn McGinley, 3537 Dexter Court, Denver, CO 80207.
