Martha Hubbard, 77 of Akron, passed away on May 18, 2013 at the East Morgan County Hospital.|
Martha Louise (Bickert) Hubbard was born to Jacob Bickert Jr. and Pauline (Meininger) Bickert on February 29, 1936 at Eben Ezer Hospital in Brush, Colorado.
Martha was raised on the farm south of Brush and went to Gary School through the 8th grade. When she started there, she only spoke German but learned English quickly. She attended Brush High School, graduating in 1954. After graduation, she went to work at Farmer's State Bank as a bookkeeper. She worked there until beginning her family in 1957.
On April 2, 1955, Martha made the drive to Raton, NM with the love of her life, Bill Hubbard, and they got married. Four children were born to this marriage: James Allen Hubbard, David Eugene Hubbard, Lori Ann Hubbard Wells, and Jerry Lee Hubbard.
Martha stayed home as a wife and mother, taking care of her family until 1980 when she went to work as a checker at Uhlenhopp's grocery store. After the closing of that store, she went to work at Odell's Supermarket, until retiring in 1998. Martha is remembered by many in the community as their favorite checker. She always had a smile, a quick wit, and was fast at getting those groceries checked through.
Martha enjoyed bowling with the Thursday Night Ladies League for many years.
Martha was preceded in death by her parents Jacob and Pauline Bickert, her son Jimmy Hubbard, and granddaughter Jenica Leigh Wells.
Left to mourn her passing are her husband William David "Bill" Hubbard of Akron; sons Dave Hubbard of Akron, Jerry Hubbard and wife Natalie of Greeley; daughter Lori Wells of Brush; sisters Ann Griggs and husband Russ of Hillrose, Eleanor Tormohlen and husband Ed of Keller, TX; granddaughter Tessa Bacon and husband Nick of Greeley; grandson Adam Wells and wife Kindra of Brush; and granddaughters Mollee and Morgan Hubbard of Greeley. She is also survived by 9 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held Friday, May 24, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church of Akron. Interment will follow at the Akron Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Akron. Bowin Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
