Michael Brian Meyer Obituary
Michael Brian Meyer, 66, of Akron passed away Monday, April 6, 2015
after a brief illness. He died at the Northern Colorado Medical
Center Hospice in Greeley, Colorado with family at his side.
Mike was born May 1, 1948 to Kenneth and Dixie Meyer in Cherokee,
Iowa. He grew up in small towns in northeastern Iowa and southern
Minnesota. He graduated from Chosen Valley High School in Chatfield,
Minnesota in 1966, then moved to Dubuque, Iowa where he attended Loras
College. Mike enlisted in the US Air Force in 1968 and served
honorably for four years as a newspaper editor, reporter, and
historical archivist. He married Linda Kuennen in 1969. They moved
to Denver in 1973 and later divorced. Mike earned a bachelor's degree
in communications at the University of Colorado at Denver in 1978.
Mike worked for St. Vincent de Paul Stores in Denver as a salesperson
and warehouse manager beginning in 1979, eventually becoming assistant
executive director. He then took a position as project manager with
Metropolitan Association for Retarded Children in Denver. He later
became a manager at Burlington Coat Factory, Hotel Furniture Outlet,
and Dress for Less Clothiers, all in Denver. One of his most
important jobs was caretaker of his mother during the last years of
her life.
Mike moved to Akron in 2008, where he worked as a substitute teacher
in the Akron School District and cashier at O'Dell's Supermarket.
Most recently, he was employed as Assistant Activities Director at
Washington County Nursing Home.
Mike enjoyed reading, film, music, caring for people, kids,
intelligent conversation, the little things in life, visiting with
customers at O'Dell's, teaching part time at local schools, spending
time with the residents at the nursing home, and especially his family
and friends. He was a Broncos fan and loved other sports and the

Mike is survived by his brothers, Tom of Akron and Greg of Moscow, ID,
sisters-in-law Becky Meyer of Akron and LuAnn Scott of Moscow, ID,
nephew Matthew Meyer and his fiancée Sarah Saraga of Broomfield, niece
Kindra Meyer of New York City, niece Tara Okpe, her husband Oliver
Okpe, and their son Mason of Westminster, niece Cassie Meyer of
Denver, aunt Mary Bernita Wilson of Manchester, IA, and cousins John
Meyer of Broomfield, Mary Ann Curran of Park View, IA, Mary Dee Utter
of DeWitt, IA, Gerry Meyer of Potomac, MD, Joe Meyer of Kissimmee, FL,
Ray Meyer of West Branch, IA, John Meyer of Las Vegas, NV, and Dixie
Kulbieda of McMurrary, PA. Mike also leaves behind Steve Gonzales,
his wife April, and their two sons to whom he was very close. Mike
was preceded in death by his father Kenneth Meyer, mother Dixie Meyer,
and brother Jeffrey Meyer.
A graveside gathering took place on April 10 at Fort Logan Military
Cemetery in Denver.
