Newell Alfred Herron Obituary
Newell Alfred Herron, 89, was born in Akron, Colorado on July 17, 1926 and passed away at home on April 26, 2016. He was the son of Merle James and Dorothy (Pieper)Herron. He attended Meekton and High Prairie schools. A man of the soil, he spent his entire life ranching and farming in the Anton and Arickaree community except for time and service in the Army during World War II. He entered the Army on April 28, 1945 at the age of 19. After training he was deployed to Nagoya, Japan arriving November 6, 1945 where he helped in rebuilding the area from the aftermath of the atomic bombing. He was discharged December 9, 1946 at which time he returned to the Anton and Arickaree community to begin his life as a farmer and rancher. Far from the warm welcome he was expecting, the bus dropped him off three miles away in 40 inches of snow.
On August 6, 1947 he married his girlfriend and neighbor, Evelyn "June" Adams in Aurora, Colorado. To this union were born four sons and one daughter, Robert Leland, LeAnn Elaine, James Terrill, John Michael and William Patrick "Rick". During the drought of the early 50's to help supplement the farm income, he worked on the construction of the Air Force Academy commuting back and forth to help with the farming.
Newell enjoyed working with his dad and close neighbors: Merle "Pat" Patterson, George Church, Harry Shedd, Fred Kniese and Lloyd Rudnik. They worked together doing farm chores of building fences, working cattle and repairing wells and windmills. They also moved in several houses from other areas for their personal residences. Pat Patterson loved to give nicknames to people and called Newell "the kid" because he was one of the youngest members of the group. He was the last surviving member of this group. They and the larger community often got together for many social gatherings. Being a modest man, Newell didn't relish dancing, but certainly enjoyed other activities like playing cards.
When he traveled, he liked his loved ones to be with him. Highlights were trips a family trip to Disney World in 2000 and a Panama Cruise in celebration of June's and his 65th wedding anniversary with the entire clan in 2012. Though he enjoyed traveling throughout the United States and foreign countries, in his heart there was nothing like being home: ginger snaps in the cookie jar, the smell of fresh-tilled earth and the laughter of grandkids around him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, stepmother Bertha (Huff) Herron; sons Robert and Rick Herron; grandsons Jason Terrill, Derek James and Jeffrey Alan Brandon; an infant brother and his sister Dorothy "Lavonne" Meyers; brother-in-laws Lawrence "Bud" Meyers, Allen Levens and Chester Smith and sister-in-law Joyce (Adams) Levens.
Newell is survived by his wife, June of 68 years; his children, LeAnn Brandon (Russell) and son Shawn of Akron; Jim (Vicki Gelster) and children Matthew of Thornton and Jessica of Greeley and John (Karen Kliewer) and children Luke and Ryan of Anton and Adam of Loveland and Rebekah (Cameron) Biondo of Greeley; brother-in-law Duane (Thelma Laybourn) Adams and sister-in-law
Marjorie (Adams) Smith and many nieces, nephews and friends. He was a very loving, devoted husband, father and grandfather and will be dearly missed.
He was a life member of the Flagler American Legion and a member of the Otis VFW.
Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on May 7, 2016 at the Akron Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the VFW.
