Phillip Richard Jones Obituary
Phillip Richard Jones died unexpectedly Sunday morning, July 30, 2017 at his home. He was born December 8, 1948 in Akron, Colorado to Richard J. Jones and Evelyn Cross Jones.
Phil grew up southwest of Akron in the Rago-Elba community on a ranch and farm combination. He attended Prairie View Grade School through fifth grade. His teacher was Mr. Clara Gray. Then, he attended Akron schools, where he graduated in 1966. He went to college on a Jack Petty Scholarship to Northeastern Junior College in Sterling, Colorado and then he transferred to the University of Northern Colorado with degrees in history, geography, and math.
He taught middle school and high school at Arriba and Rocky Ford, Colorado for over thirty years. He had perfect attendance for all those years! He received an award for being the most outstanding teacher at Rocky Ford.
After he retired from teaching, he returned to live with his parents and help them. Phil had a great love for animals, especially race horses. He was a leading owner and trainer at Cheyenne Frontier Days and other race tracks in Colorado.
One time as a young boy, he bought a little white Saanen goat from his uncle Harold Cross to give to his sister, Julie, for her birthday. But by the time her birthday arrived, he had become so attached to it that he retained half ownership.
He was a great gardener. He always raised the best tomatoes, peas, carrots, and sweet corn of the entire family! He had an exceptional memory. Whenever he played Concentration, a card game, he could remember where every card was after it had been turned over.
Phil is survived by his father, mother, and younger sister Julie Jones Johnson, her husband Donald Johnson; two nieces, Lori Johnson Hardman and Shari Johnson Hofheins; and one nephew, Scott Johnson. He will be missed by his many cousins and friends.
A graveside service was held Saturday, August 5, 2017 at the Cope Cemetery in Cope, Colorado.
