Wilbur Ivan Allen Obituary
Wilbur Ivan Allen was born June 7, 1928 to Albert Wilbur Allen and Stella May (Green) Allen as the 9th of their 11 children. He passed away on January 23, 2013 at the age of 84 in St. Anthony's Hospital in Lakewood Colorado. Wilbur was born on the homestead in Washington County south of Yuma. The school was located a 100 yards north of the home making it easy to attend school. In 1932 May and the children came to Yuma so the older children could attend high school and Wilbur could attend grade school. In 1942 Wilbur finished the eighth grade and went to work for Gisi turkey plant. Wilbur started working for his dad at the age of 16 and lived on the ranch alone taking care of the Hereford Cattle. In April of 1934 Wilbur was baptized in the Methodist faith and in 1943 he joined the Methodist church in Yuma and has been loyal and an active member for 50 years and more serving on committees and various positions in the church.
Wilbur was married to Mary Lea Fuerst on October 30, 1949 at Mary's parent's home west of Yuma. Than Mary joined Wilbur on the ranch. They had two daughters Marietta Lea on October 10, 1950 and Patty Ann July 21, 1952. Wilbur continued to work for his dad until his dad passed away in 1962. He than continued to operate the ranch for his mom until she died in 1967. Wilbur inherited his share of the ranch and combined this with what he purchased earlier. He continued to run Hereford cattle and later crossbred Charolais into the herd. In 1974 Wilbur and Mary started to develop irrigation. Wilbur farmed the pivots with his friend Birdsall Young until his son in law joined the operation in 1976. Later after many years of farming Wilbur decided to lease the farm land out so he could focus on being a rancher and gas well pumper. In 1984 Wilbur and Mary purchased a home in Yuma which he continued to drive back and forth from Yuma and the ranch to continue his ranching and gas well pumping. Wilbur broke his hip in 2003 and in 2005 he had a severe heart attack which led to his full retirement.
