Bill Hubbard, 84 of Akron, passed away June 16, 2014 at the Denver Health Medical Center following a motorcycle accident on June 14th. |
William David (Bill) Hubbard was born April 25, 1930 at the family home 5 miles north of Iliff, CO, the 4th of 7 children to Allen Jefferson Hubbard and Catherine Arabelle (Sloan) Hubbard. The family relocated to Snyder, CO to farm and Bill went to the Snyder School. Bill helped with the farming and then went to work for a carnival company at the age of 15.
On April 23, 1951, Bill joined the Army, serving at Fort Belvoir, Virginia and later in Alaska. He was honorably discharged on April 23, 1953 to the Army Reserve, serving until April 23, 1956.
After serving his country, he came back to Brush and went to work for the Chevrolet Garage. One day while working there, a pretty young girl came in to get the oil changed in her father's vehicle. He asked Martha out and they fell in love. Bill and Martha Louise Bickert were married on April 2, 1955. Four children were born to this marriage: James Allen "Jimmy" Hubbard, David Eugene "Dave" Hubbard, Lori Ann (Hubbard) Wells, and Jerry Lee Hubbard.
Bill later went to work at Stickney's in Brush, then to C&C Auto Parts as a Partsman. In 1968, he was hired at Spicknall's Motor Service as a Partsman. In 1969, he moved the family to Akron where he worked for Spicknall's for 40 years.
Bill will be lovingly remembered as a knowledgeable Partsman who loved to visit with his customers. He was an avid bowler, a rockhound, a classic car collector, a motorcycle rider, a dancer, and an avid walker. He was a kind, gentle, fun-loving man who knew no strangers and could strike up a conversation with anyone and find some common interest.
In November 1997, Bill won the Colorado Lottery. It was such an exciting time, yet it didn't change him at all. He continued to live life as a simple man with family and friends coming first.
Bill was preceded in death by his wife Martha; his parents, Allen and Belle Hubbard; brothers Delbert, Clyde, Willis, and Allen "Red" Hubbard; sister Iola Wagner; son Jimmy Hubbard; and granddaughter Jenica Wells.
Left to mourn his passing are his sister Frances Hinds of Paden, OK; sons Dave Hubbard of Akron, and Jerry Hubbard and wife Natalie of Greeley; daughter Lori Wells of Brush; granddaughter Tessa Bacon and husband Nick of Greeley; grandson Adam Wells and wife Kindra of Brush; granddaughter Mollee Hubbard of Greeley; and granddaughter Morgan Hubbard of Fort Collins. He is also survived by 9 great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, and honorary granddaughter Dencia (Spicknall) Raish.
A funeral service was held Friday, June 20, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church of Akron. Interment followed at the Akron Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the Hi Plains Car Club.
