Edward (Ed) Armstrong Obituary

Edward (Ed) Raymond Armstrong, 77, went home to be with his Lord on March 21, 2014, in Las Cruces.
Ed was born on Aug. 6, 1936, in Creighton, Pa., to parents Archie and Ethel Mae Irvine Armstrong. He married his wife, Barbara, on Dec. 18, 1984, in Andrews, Texas, and moved to Cloudcroft, in 2004.
Ed served in the United States Air Force and graduated from the University of Texas Permian Basin in 1983 with a bachelor's degree in Psychology. He was a handwriting analyst, loved golfing, gold prospecting and was a true mountain man, always helping others at every opportunity.
Ed especially loved to spend time with and adored his granddaughter, Baili Jones. He was deeply concerned and involved in the preservation of the forest and the natural habitat. His "best friend" was his dog, Wolfie (deceased).
He was with the Liquor Control and worked for the Texas Parks and Recreation Department; however, the job he most loved was working for NASA where he was responsible for locating and collecting space history for the Smithsonian Institute. He later served as the superintendent of maintenance for the Midland Mall when it was first built, a probation officer and, in retirement, worked as an aid in the Andrews public school system helping special needs children.
Ed is survived by his wife of 29 years, Barbara; sons Timothy Armstrong, of Graham, Texas, and Kevin Whelchel fiancé, Bonniep; and her daughter Allison Onate, of Cloudcroft, Cody Whelchel (Daniella), of Cloudcroft, daughter Sheri Jones(Pamela Burnett) of Lubbock, and granddaughter Baili Jones, of Lubbock; his brothers Ron Armstrong (Linda), of Colorado, Doug Armstrong (Carolyn), of California, and Dick Armstrong (Ruby), of Washington; and his sisters, Arlene Sellers (John), of Atlanta, and Grace Zahradnik, of Pennsylvania.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, March 28, 2014, at the Cloudcroft United Methodist Church in Cloudcroft, to be officiated by Rev. Eileen Utton.
Memorial gifts may be made to Cloudcroft United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 229, Cloudcroft, NM 88317 or the Mesilla Valley Hospice, 299 E. Montana, Las Cruces, NM 88005.
Arrangements are with Getz Funeral Home 1410 E. Bowman Ave., Las Cruces, New Mexico 88001. To sign the local online guest book visit www.GetzCares.com

I did not know Ed well, being I had only been in his company three times. But in those three short visits it was obvious he was a very unique, intelligent, caring man. He was one you could visit with for hours and never tire. I only wish I could have spent more time with this very very special man. My sincere sympathy to the entire family but especially to Baili. I know you loved him very much and the love he had for you could not be measured !!
