Cruz R. "Sal" Salazar
Cruz R. "Sal" Salazar, 79, retired Tech. Sgt. U.S. Air Force, passed away peacefully in the family home Thursday morning Oct., 31, 2013.
Sal was assigned to Holloman A.F.B. in 1972 and retired from the Air Force in 1976, making Alamogordo his home for the remaining years of his life. He continued his Holloman ties by driving the snack truck and making many, many more friends.
As life member of VFW
Post 7686, Sal called Bingo several nights a week for more than 30 years making thousands of friends, some of whom cursed him incessantly for not calling that one number. Unfortunately for us all, his number has. He will be deeply missed.
Sal is survived by his wife of 54 years, Camilla A. (Byrum) Salazar; brother Manuel Salazar of Ft. Madison, Iowa; sisters Irene Reyes, of Ft. Madison; and Sally Doty, of Kirkwood, Ill.; children Mike Salazar and wife, Tammy, Lisa Salazar-Tally and husband, Hank, Marc Salazar and Dana Salazar, all of Alamogordo; and Dina Suchland-Salazar and husband, Jim, of Marshall, Ark.
Sal was a devoted grandfather to his 17 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren all of whom knew him as their "Poppy." Sal also leaves behind many more beloved family members, no less important, but to numerous to name.
He is preceded in death by his parents Luiz and Margarita Salazar, brothers Ray, Lou and Gene; and grandson Richard.
Funeral Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 7, 2013, in the Alamogordo Funeral Home Chapel.
Interment will follow in Monte Vista Cemetery.
The family will greet friends from 1 p.m. until the service time at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be Estevan Balderrama, Richard Garcia, Freddie Garcia, Greg Jones, Johnny Guinn and Dane Brown.
