Doris Helms of Alamogordo passed away on April 23, 2014.
She was born in 1921 in Arcadia, Wis.
She is survived and loved by her six children: James (Rita) Helms, Paula Byrd, Tim Helms, Leon Helms, Marilyn Heide, Kendal (Penny Helms) 11 grandchildren, 14 greatchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Ed and May Abts; brothers, Victor and David Abts; sister Phyllis Hammer, and husband Arlo Helms.
Doris proudly served in the Women's Auxiliary Corp during World War II
. She was stationed at Fort Meyer and worked in the code room at the Pentagon. She was scheduled to participate in the WWII Honor Flight at the time of her death.
She married Arlo in February of 1945. They were married for 56 years, at the time of his death.
Doris was a homemaker and had many other interests. Her favorite and her talents were the arts, including: painting, wood carving and stained glass, as well as fiber art. She competed internationally. She won an honorable mention at the Wood Carving Show of 1972.
Doris -- mom, grandmother -- had an adventurous soul and prospered in family, friends, art and new learning experiences.
She requested there be no memorial service. In lieu of flowers, love your children and make a generous contribution to Father J. B. Hay in Alamogordo.
