Edwin Madl, 97
Edwin Madl, 97, of Walnut, Kan., passed away on Thursday Jan. 9, 2014, at Memorial Medical Center in Las Cruces, following a short illness.
He was born Feb. 10, 1916, in St. Paul, Kan., to John and Katherine (Van Leeuwen) Madl. He was the third of four children. He grew up on his parent's farm in rural St. Paul and graduated from St. Paul High School.
He married Mary Catherine Stephan on Sept. 9, 1944, in Girard, Kan. They celebrated their 69th wedding anniversary in 2013.
Edwin enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corp on Jan 31, 1940. He served in World War II
as a Technical Sergeant in Hawaii, the South Pacific and at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina.
Following his discharge from the Marines, he attended electronics school in Chicago. He worked for 35 years at Beech Aircraft, in Wichita, Kan. Following his retirement from Beech, Edwin and Mary moved to the family farm near Walnut. Edwin continued to manage the farm until his death. Edwin and Mary have spent their winters with their son in La Luz, for the past 12 years.
Edwin was a devoted husband, father and faithful member of the Catholic Church. He was a man of many skills who loved to keep busy on activities such as woodworking. He will be greatly missed by his family.
Survivors include his wife, Mary, of the home; three children Karen Rafferty and her husband, Andrew, of Kerrville, Texas, James Madl, of La Luz, and Larry Madl and his wife, Angela, of Carlsbad; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his two brothers Melvin and Cyril Madl, and his sister Katherine Whelan.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at Our Lady of the Light Catholic Church in La Luz at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 25
The Madl family has entrusted their loved one to the care of Alamogordo Funeral Home to direct the arrangements. Cremation has taken place at PCS.
