Ernest B. Gutierrez

On Wednesday, Aug. 21, 2013, Ernest B. Gutierrez, 94, passed away peacefully after a heart attack earlier in the month. A native of La Luz, Ernest was completing his studies at Eastern New Mexico State University while training as a Naval Air Cadet as the nation prepared for World War II, but was recruited and brought to Washington in 1941 by the U.S. State Department, beginning a career which included posts in Latin America, the Middle East and Europe.
After retirement from his 36-year career in the Foreign Service, Ernest and his wife, Maruja, settled in Falls Church, Va., but they also traveled extensively and enjoyed many cruises as well as a winter home in Spain.
In addition to his wife, Maruja, Ernest is survived by his sons Ernest Jr. (Tito) and Richard (Dickie) and his wife, Nancy, residents of the Washington D,C. area, a daughter Sonia, of Tucson, Ariz., his brother Gilbert Gutierrez, of La Luz, his grandsons Michael and Stephen, and Michael's wife, Linda.
Ernest was preceded in death by his parents Juan Jose and Aurelia Borunda Gutierrez, of La Luz, and brothers Alberto, Estevan, Ricardo, Fidel and Rudolfo Gutierrez.
Ernest will be cremated and a memorial service will be held at Advent Funeral Services, 7211 Lee Highway, Falls Church, at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2013. Memorial comments may be posted at www.adventfuneral.com.
