Jose Raul "Cuno" Ortega was gathered into the arms of the Lord on Monday Oct. 14, 2013. Raul was born on April 5, 1931, in Alamogordo to Angel and Dolores Saenz Ortega.
Raul spent his childhood in Alamogordo where he was an altar boy at Immaculate Conception Church. He graduated from Alamogordo High School in 1949 where he participated in football, track and boxing. After graduation, he proudly volunteered to serve his country as a U. S. Marine in the Korean War
. Upon returning from the Korean War, he worked at Holloman Air Force Base as a Property Disposal Supervisor until his retirement in 1985.
During his retirement he worked for the Alamogordo Public Schools as a campus assistant. He was a member of the local chapter of Disabled American Veterans and Veterans of Foreign Wars
. He was a self-made auto mechanic who took pleasure in repairing cars as a hobby.
He was a parishioner at St. Jude Parish in Alamogordo. He loved to travel and sing and play the harmonica at family gatherings. He loved the Lord and enjoyed fellowship with his Bible study groups. His greatest joy was spending time with his family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sister Ernestina Baca.
Survivors include his wife, Lucy Ortega, of the family home; daughters Teresa Ekmark and husband, Robert, and Geraldine Samora and husband, Leo, all of Alamogordo; and son Joseph Ortega, of Salt Lake City, Utah. He has four grandchildren Travis Ekmark, of Dallas, Texas, Amada Gonzalez, of Ft. Bliss, Texas, Dario Samora, of Portales, and Daniel Samora, of Socorro, N.M.; and great-grand children Izac and David Gonzalez.
Survivors also include sisters Nina Zamora and Virginia Garcia, of Alamogordo; Dora Garcia, of El Paso; Cece Martinez, of Las Cruces; brother Vince Ortega, of Alamogordo; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The rosary for Raul Ortega will be recited by family friend, Carlos Hernandez at St. Jude Parish, 1404 College Ave. in Alamogordo at 9:15 a.m. Monday, Oct. 21, 2013. Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated following the rosary at 10 a.m.
Raul was a beloved husband, father, grandfather and brother. He will be greatly missed.
The Ortega Family has entrusted their loved one to the care of Alamogordo Funeral Home to
direct the arrangements. Cremation will take place at PCS.
