Pastor Emmett Lee Schmitt
Pastor Emmett Lee Schmitt died Jan. 22, 2014, at his home in Alamogordo at the age of 91. Emmett was born the eighth of 10 children to John and Emma (Scheidel) Schmitt on Aug. 12, 1922, in Louisville, Ky.
He graduated from Wittenberg College in 1944. On June 13, 1945, he married Phyllis Lauver, whom he had met at Wittenberg. They lived in Springfield, Ohio, while Emmett finished seminary at Hamma Divinity School. In May 1947, Emmett was ordained as a Lutheran pastor, serving his first parish in Melbourne, Ky. He also served parishes in Louisville, Walton, Ind., Dayton, Ohio, and Versailles, Ohio, before moving to Alamogordo in August, 1968 to serve as pastor of Our Savior Lutheran Church. In August 1978 Pastor Schmitt retired from active ministry and he and Phyllis moved to Estes Park, Colorado where they built a mountain home. After moving back to Alamogordo in 1981, Pastor Schmitt served as interim pastor in El Paso and Carlsbad and did some supply preaching.
Emmett was preceded in death by his parents, nine brothers and sisters and his wife Phyllis who died July 10, 2008.
He is survived by his four children Mary Leslie Schmitt, of Alamogordo, Sarah Hadfield and husband, Daryl, of Carlsbad, Philip Schmitt and wife, Darlene, of Point, Texas, and Margaret Anne Schmitt Ajer and husband, Richard, of Denver, Colo. He is also survived by seven grandchildren Carrie (Hadfield) Hodnett and husband, John, Matthew Hadfield and wife, Kelly, Kelli Schmitt and fiancé, Garrett Crocker, Andrew (Andy) Schmitt and wife, Hannah, Katherine (Katy) Ajer, Rebecca (Becca) Ajer, and Andrew Ajer. He was lovingly known as GGPa to five great-grandchildren Emilee (Emi), Cayden, and McKinlee Hodnett, and Grace and Cooper Hadfield.
A Memorial Service for Pastor Schmitt will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 30, 2014, with Pastor Bill Heithold officiating.
Memorial contributions may be made to Alamogordo Home Care and Hospice or Trinity Lutheran Church.
The Schmitt family has entrusted their loved one to the care of Alamogordo Funeral Home.
