Samuel Robert Stubbs, MD, 85
Samuel Robert Stubbs, MD, 85, passed away on January 23, 2014 in Alamogordo. He was born on Oct. 10, 1928, in Pershing, Okla., to Samuel and Maude (Cole) Stubbs.
Beginning in 1957, Dr. Stubbs enjoyed a long career as a local physician. In both private practice and as an emergency room "Doc," he touched many lives in a positive way.
Dr. Stubbs was one of the original "founding fathers" of the emergency room services in southern New Mexico. To name but a few of the numerous contributions he provided to the Alamogordo community and surrounding areas are public health services, vaccine availability, involvement in the establishment of the Zia therapy center and member of the board of directors at Betty Dare.
He was also an active staff member at Gerald Champion Memorial Hospital. However, Dr. Stubbs always felt that his greatest accomplishment was the delivery of over 1,500 healthy babies to the community. An exceedingly calm demeanor and trustworthiness were his trademarks. Along with his direct family, many people counted him as a trusted friend, adviser or surrogate father. His easy laugh, dry wit and big shoulders so many had the opportunity to cry on will be sorely missed.
Survivors include his wife, Coletta (Lenahan) Stubbs; son John Stubbs (Betzaida), of Albuquerque; daughter Margaret Najara (Sonny), of Albuquerque; stepdaughters Mary Louise Wassenberg (David), Brenda DeBoo-Nicely (Gelvin), of Tuscon, Ariz., and Kris Malett (Randy), of Alamogordo; and stepsons Robert DeBoo (Colette), of Honolulu, Hawaii, Brian DeBoo (Ellen), of Sacramento, Calif., and Dennis DeBoo (Elva), of Sacramento. Dr Stubbs is also leaving behind three grandchildren Kami Daily, Stefan and Santiago Najara; and, his pride and joy, three great-grandchildren Rainn Daily, Haven Daily and Gage Daily.
He was preceded in death by his father Samuel Robert Stubbs; mother Maude M Stubbs and grandson Robert Wayne Wassenberg.
The family has entrusted their loved one to the care of Alamogordo Funeral Home to direct the arrangements. Cremation will take place at PCS. Per the request of Dr Stubbs, no service is planed.
