Eliseo C. Covarrubia, 94, a long-time resident of Alamogordo, passed peacefully at Casa Arena Blanca Nursing Home on Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2013. Eliseo was born on Aug. 15, 1919, in Oklahoma City, Okla., and came to Alamogordo as a child.
As a young man, Eliseo moved to Morenci, Ariz., to work in the mines. He then returned to Alamogordo to work for White Sands Missile Range and Prestige Lumber Company. During World War II, he served in the United States Army infantry in the Philippine Islands from 1944-1946. Upon returning from the war, he worked at Holloman Air Force Base with Dynalectron Corporation Land Air Support Division. He started as a janitor and worked his way up to working the printing press. He received a support division award in 1977 and retired with over 20 years of service in 1980.
Eliseo served the Knights of Columbus, Disabled American Veterans, National Guard and was the lead usher at Immaculate Conception Church for many years.
He is survived by his six children Mary Ponce and her husband, Dino, of Chaparral; Katy Carroll, of Great Bend, Kan.; Francis Torres and her husband, Jose, of El Paso; Helen Briseno and her husband, Albert, of Las Cruces; Richard Covarrubia and his wife, Louisa, of Los Lunas; and Manuel Covarrubia and his wife, Norma, of San Antonio. He is also survived by 30 grandchildren, 41 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ricardo and Juanita (Carrillo) Covarrubia, his wife of 60 years, Mary O. Covarrubia, (1939-2000) and his son Alex Covarrubia, in 2001.
Rosary will be recited at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 17, 2013, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated after the Rosary at 10 a.m. with Father Mike Lindsay, Celebrant. Interment will follow at Immaculate Conception Catholic Cemetery.
