Herbert H. Baxter, Jr., 72, passed away on Nov. 25, 2013, in Las Cruces. He was born on March 21, 1941, in East Prairie, Mo., to Herbert Henry and Florence Stokes Baxter.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served as a paratrooper in Okinawa. After service to his country he went to work for the railroad, retiring as a conductor for the CSX Railroad. Herb never met a stranger and was loved by many for his smile and quick wit.
Survivors include his beloved wife, Frances Eldridge Baxter, of the family home; two daughters Rhonda, of Paris, Tenn., and Kimberly, of Opp, Ala.; six grandchildren, two brothers Delbert "Pete" Baxter and wife, Mary, of Alamogordo, and Johnny Baxter and wife, Judy, of Amory, Miss.; sister-in-law Alice Baca Baxter, of Alamogordo; nephews Delbert, Jr., Eddie, John Keith and wife, Mary, and Kevin and wife, Dana; and very special friends Al and Ann Marie Hernandez, of Alamogordo, and Roy and Beth Beck, of Masontown, Pa.
He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant son.
The family will have a private service at a future date.

The Baxter family has entrusted their loved one to the care of Hamilton-O'Dell Funeral Home to direct the arrangements. Cremation will take place at PCS.
