Leroy (Rick) Dawsey, 63, passed away Oct. 10, 2013, in Albuquerque. He was born June 9, 1950, at Holy Cross Hospital in Austin, Texas, to Junious and Irmogene Dawsey.
Rick was 4-years-old when his parents brought him and his brother to Alamogordo in February 1955. He joined Owen Chapel A.M.E. Church at an early age. He participated in Sunday school and Allen Christian Endeavor League every Sunday through high school. Rick graduated from Alamogordo High School in 1968. He attended Eastern New Mexico University for three years and left college in 1972 to join the Army. He did his basic training in Fort Polk, La. After completion of basic training, he went to a tech school in Chicago, Ill. From there, he was sent to Officer Candidate School in Fort Benning, Ga., until his honorable discharge in 1975, due to a heart murmur.
Leroy married Angela Nathan in 1973. From this union one son, Asim Jemonne, was born. After leaving the service in Fort Benning, Rick and family moved to Portales to finish his last year of college.
While there, he suffered a minor stroke. He was taken to the V.A. Hospital in Albuquerque, where he stayed quite a while getting treatment. After being released, he continued to live in Albuquerque. He never got his life back together after the stroke. He struggled for 37 years with this condition until he had a stroke Oct. 13, 2013 that took his life.
Rick is survived by his son Asim and his wife, Yolanda; two granddaughters Takiyah and Autumn of Montgomery, Ala.; mother Irmogene Dawsey, of Alamogordo; sister Candace Branch, of Alamogordo; and brother Junious E. Dawsey Jr. and wife, Michelle, of Tucson, Ariz.
He is preceded in death by his father Junious E. Dawsey, Sr. and his brother-in-law Sylvester Branch of Alamogordo.
Funeral service will take place at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 19, 2013, at Alamogordo Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Warren Robinson officiating. The family will greet friends at 1 p.m. prior to the service. A reception will take place at Corinth Baptist Church immediately following.
Burial will take place at the National Cemetery at Fort Bliss in El Paso, at 11 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 21, 2013.
The Dawsey family has entrusted their loved one to the care of Alamogordo Funeral Home to direct the funeral services.
