Arturo "Art" Alarcón, Jr., 88, of Alamogordo, died Thursday, Feb. 14, 2008, in Alamogordo.
Mr. Alarcón was born Nov. 11, 1919, in Laredo, Texas, to Arturo and Francisca (Mesa) Alarcón. He was a Army Air Corps veteran of World War II. He lived most of his life in Laredo where he retired from civil service in 1975 from the Laredo Air Force Base. He then was a building inspector for the City of Laredo until his second retirement in 1984. In Laredo he was a very active member of Blessed Sacrament Parish. He moved to Alamogordo in 1997 and was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. He was an avid bowler until he was 85, and he loved fishing, hunting and baseball.
Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Gloria Alarcón of the family home; a son, Arturo A. Alarcón and his wife Theresa, of Houston, Texas; two daughters, Gloria Ann Alarcón and Sylvia M. Alarcón, both of Alamogordo; three grandchildren, Michael A., Andrew S. and Emily J. Alarcón, all of Houston; and a brother, Fernando Alarcón and his wife Aurora, of Laredo.
He was preceded in death by his parents and five sisters, Benita, Dolores, Ernestina, Refugio and Elena.
A vigil service will be conducted Monday at 7 p.m. at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with the rosary to be recited by Estela Valle.
Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated in the church Tuesday at 10 a.m. with Father Bryant Hausfeld, O.F.M., as celebrant.
Interment will follow in the Immaculate Conception Catholic Cemetery with military honors by the Holloman Air Force Base Honor Guard.
Pallbearers will be Arturo A. Alarcón, Michael Alarcón, Andrew Alarcón, Fernando Alarcón Jr., Ken Gardner, Rome Martinez and Paul Sena. Honorary pallbearer will be Emily Alarcón.
Friends may call Monday from 3 p.m. until 5 p.m. at Hamilton-O'Dell Funeral Home.
