Benito Sanchez Candelaria, 91, entered eternal rest on April 26, 2013, in Alamogordo.
Benito was born in Arabela, N.M., on July 23, 1921, to Jose and Isidra Sanchez Candelaria. He married Carmelita Gomez on Dec. 13, 1944, in Carrizozo before proudly serving the United States Army in World War II from 1944-1945. While in the Army, he served in Okinawa, Saipan and the Philippines, earning two Purple Hearts, a sharpshooter marksmanship badge and a Bronze Star for his heroic actions during the war.
A fun-loving family man, Benito came home to the Southwest where he worked as a farmer, a copper miner, a sheepherder, a barber, a truck driver and a carpenter. He was a long-time usher in the Catholic Church in his home of Alamogordo.
He is survived by his wife of 68 years Carmelita Gomez Candelaria; brother Celestino; sisters Arsenia Lucero and Susie Sanchez; son Gilbert and wife Hilda of Tijeras; son James and wife Janet of Las Cruces; son Anthony and wife Sue of Tucson, Ariz.; daughter Sylvia; grandchildren Karla, Lisa, Stephanie, Rose Alina Holguin, Aaron, Jessica and Jenna; and great-grandchildren Sarah, William, and Colin McDuffie and Angel Holguin. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Edward (Lolo), Valois, Eloy and Graciano; sisters Alma, Soyla Bell, and Lucinda Nuñez; and son Jose. He will be remembered as a sociable, witty man who made friends wherever he went.
The Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Monday, April 29, 2013, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 30, 2013 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with Fr. Raymond Flores with Fr. Mike Lindsay Con-Celebrant.
Interment will follow at Immaculate Conception Catholic Cemetery. The family will greet friends from 6 to 7 p.m. at the church. The Candelaria family has entrusted their loved one to the care of Alamogordo Funeral Home to direct the funeral services.
