Esther "Margaret" Longwell Kavel, 95, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 21, 2012, in Truth or Consequences. She was born Aug. 26, 1917, "somewhere in the Penasco area of the Sacramento Mountains in New Mexico" to Thomas Benjamin and Mamie S. (Baca) Longwell.
"All together we totaled nine (five girls and four boys)." Margaret is survived by her children Margaret "Peggy" Folz, of Phoenix, Darryl F. Kavel and Roberta Y. Kavel, both of Alamogordo, Michael Kavel, of Los Lunas, and Karen Canupp, of San Antonio, Texas; 17 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
In addition to her extensive volunteer work in Alamogordo, she was a member of the Sunshine Band and a poetry society. Mom and Dad were the first "since February 1997 in Alamogordo working toward establishing an American Armed Forces Museum for Otero County." She loved God foremost and others, including her husband, Peter, who preceded her in death in 2007. They were both World War II veterans of the U.S. Navy.
Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 8, 2012, at St. John's Episcopal Church, 1114 Indiana Ave., Alamogordo, with the Rev. Dr. Thomas Arrowsmith-Lowe, SOSc, officiating. As Mom would have wanted, the service is open to everyone.
Should friends desire, contributions may be made to St. John's Episcopal Church and/or The Zia Therapy Center.
The Kavel family has entrusted their loved one to the care of Alamogordo Funeral Home to direct the arrangements. Cremation will take place at PCS.

It was ordained:
Our fathers were brothers,
Our mothers were sisters -
They wed one another
Respectively, our mother, Mamie, to Ben;
Your mother Barbarite, to John -
No mortal could rend them asunder
Together we became their progeny;
Reveling in each other's company.
Two of you (sisters); nine of us
(brothers and sisters)
We are double-cousins,
So-called, and twice blest –
A special bond so unique,
This be a legacy, I think!
