Grace Nenninger Obituary

Grace Louella Nenninger, Lou, of Alamogordo, passed away Monday, Feb. 15, 2010, at the extraordinary age of 93 (and a half). She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold, and son Larry and is survived (amazingly, considering the grief she gave them) by her daughters Franke Gill, of Dallas, Marty Mills, of Cloudcroft, Sue Kehoe, of Artesia, and Teresa Bornmann, of Alamogordo, who were comforted in knowing she kept all who were able to visit her laughing until the end.
Born in Sapulpa, Okla., in 1916 to James Story Taylor and Orabell Ashurst, she grew up in a difficult time with resources hard to come by. She proudly passed to her children her ability to discover a great deal and make a meal from nothing. She was known by her friends for her love of bridge, a good football game and a better joke (which she always seemed to pull out of her memory on mostly appropriate occasions).
Her nine grandchildren, Meg, Micah, Stuart, Graham, Taylor, April Candace, Nichole and Colin, also survive her. When asked how many great-grandchildren she had, she would reply, "They're all great!" She loved to have her gaggle of great-grandchildren Trier, Jeremy, Josh, Valen, Wesley, William, Hayley, Keiran, Grace and Reece around, but especially when they were outside in the backyard and not under her feet. And she will be missed by her ever faithful and loving dog, Zippy, who was her favorite of all the aforementioned.
Just before she passed, she was reorganizing her recipes on her computer. We are so glad to have them (although "some" of this and "some" of that make for interesting meals). Per her request, anyone who still possesses one of her jelly jars (including hospital laboratory staff) should return them to any of her children for reuse.
We are required to insert this disclaimer, written by Lou (or we will not inherit anything!)
"Do not believe anything the wretched girls tell you. I was kind and generous and loving and beautiful and in general the most wonderful person you could ever have known. So there."
Please join her family in sharing your fond memories of her at memorial services to be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 18, 2010, at Hamilton-O'Dell Funeral Home in Alamogordo.

Franke, Stuart and Kelly,
I think I met her a couple of times but I love hearing about her and the picture is great. I always heard her referred to as Gobs. Sounds like she was quite the lady.

I really enjoyed Lou. I had the pleasure of meeting her a few years ago and always loved talking to her, laughing at her jokes and listening to her stories. She showed up one day, right before her 90th birthday, with a brand new PT Cruiser - said she traded in her 'old lady car' for something sportier!!! Gotta love her! I am so sorry for your loss. Lou was one in a million. My prayers go out to all of you.

I know none of you, nor did I the lady herself, Mrs. Grace Louella Nenninger, but her obituary has made the news out here, so I moseyed on over from far-off RI to read it, which I just did. Now that's the way to leave this world--with style, wit and grace. I can only assume these last words reflect the manner in which she conducted her life and her business as well. If so, she was one of those bright lights the rest of us flock to like moths to a flame. May your fond memories of her see you through this difficult time, and sustain you going forward.

Marti, I loved reading this wonderful story of your mom. It is truly her. I loved being around her and she always, always kept me on my toes. Her attitude was the one we should all have when we reach her age. I only wish I had known she died before her memorial service. It would have been my pleasure to be there. Take care and let me know if you need anything. Love you.

I used to work for a company that provided emergency medical buttons and often check the obituaries to see if a former company client has passed away. I never met this great lady but from reading this loving and delightful obituary I know that I certainly misssed something for not having known her. God speed Ms. Nenninger. Our loss is heaven's gain.

I knew Lou as an employee of the U.S. Forest Service in the early 1980's. I was the District Administrator at the Cloudcroft Ranger Station at that time and needed an assistant. Fortunately, Lou wanted a part time job, so she and I became an office team. Lou was a joy to know and she knew how to work!! My heart felt thoughts go out to Lou's family. She was a joy to have known.

I resently joined the bridge club she played with on Thursday. She was just amazing and a delight. I will miss her very much. Lou if you find a bridge table in heaven I hope they are on their toes or you will beat the socks off of them.
