Helen Albers Obituary
Helen Albers was born March 29, 1921, in Pine River, Minn., to Adam and Anna Jane Fox. At the age of 3, she and her family moved to Brainerd. Helen attended Brainerd schools and graduated from Washington High School in 1939 and Brainerd Junior College in 1941.
In her younger days, Helen loved being outdoors and enjoyed hiking, riding bicycles, ice skating and swimming. In school, she enjoyed playing basketball, volleyball, tumbling, rope jumping and anything that was going on in the gym.
On Nov. 23, 1942, she married Bill Albers and they raised three children. Helen was involved in many of her children's activities. She taught Sunday school at the Methodist Church for seven years and was a youth counselor for one year. She enjoyed being a Blue Bird and Camp Fire leader for six years. She was active in the PTA, home-room mother many times, chaperoned field trips and attended her children's school activities. Bill and Helen hosted Ludo Welffens, a foreign student from Belgium, for a year and maintained contact and had visits with him and his family throughout the years.
Helen worked as secretary for the State Parole and probation agent for 13 years and then worked for Crow Wing County Social Services for 15 years, retiring in 1980 to move to Alamogordo with Bill.
In Alamogordo, she was a member of Grace United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women. One of her greatest pleasures was Navajo weaving at the weaving school in La Luz where she completed over 25 rugs. She enjoyed golfing at the Cloudcroft golf course, and especially loved going there as it reminded her of her hometown of Brainerd.
She loved the mountains and enjoyed traveling around the historic sights. Life to her was usually beautiful and she enjoyed her family and friends very much. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill, son Larry, her parents, four siblings and a grandson.
Survivors include her son Ron (Rebecca) Albers, daughter Kathie (Richard) Farrell, four grandsons Daniel, Michael, Patrick and Oliver and three great-granddaughters.
Helen spent the last years of her life at The Aristocrat and grew to love the staff. Her family would like to express their gratitude for the gentle care they provided to Helen, especially in her last days. Helen also was on Hospice care, and words cannot express our thanks to the people involved with her.
Should friends desire and in lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to Hospice, PO Drawer 29, Alamogordo, NM 88311, so they can continue their amazing mission.
A celebration-of-life service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 15, 2013, at Grace United Methodist Church in Alamogordo with Reverend Jack Moffatt officiating.
The Albers family has entrusted their loved one to the care of Hamilton O'Dell Funeral Home to direct the arrangements. Cremation will take place at PCS.
