Josefita "Fita" Barreras (Mrs. B)
Josefita Barreras, 79, passed away on Thursday, Sept. 26, 2013, in El Paso. She was born on Aug. 25, 1934, in Albuquerque, to Aurelio and Rosaura Jaramillo Candelaria.
Josefita was raised in Albuquerque, along side her siblings Samuel, Ambrose, Perfecto, Rosella and Margaret. She married into a military life and was very proud to be a military wife supporting her husband, Bennie, while he served our country in the United States Air Force. She spoke fondly of her travels around the world as a military wife. Her primary focus and love was her family. She was proud of all her children and grandchildren's accomplishments. She was the first to applaud loudly and cheer them on. Fita was sure to be in the stands cheering for the Tigers, Wildcats, Cougars and Thunderbirds.
She was an avid fan of all sports and was a true blue and silver Dallas Cowboy fan. Fita did not know a stranger and she helped the community as a volunteer at the Salvation Army several times each week.
She was a member of St. Jude mission. Her death was sudden and difficult to understand but she was a strong Christian woman of faith. The family knows she is with God now. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
Survivors include her sons Richard Mier, Jr and wife, Linda, of El Paso; Mark Mier and wife, Lilie, of Alamogordo; and Philip Barreras and wife, Brenda, of Tularosa; daughters Rosemarie Simmons and husband, Jon, of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and Marijo Velarde, of Peralta, NM; grandchildren Leticia, Jeremy, Dominique, William, Victoria, Daphne, Eddie and Marcos; and four great-grandchildren Isaac Jr., Emilio, Karina and Mariana; and one on the way.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Benjamin P. Barreras, and siblings Samuel, Perfecto and Rosella.
The Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2013, in the Hamilton-O'Dell Chapel.
