Rudy was born on Dec. 24, 1926, in San Antonio, Texas, and grew up in El Paso.
As a veteran of World War II, he served his country from 1945-1946.
On October 31, 1954, he married Elvira in El Paso where they lived before moving to Alamogordo in 1964. He worked as a wholesale distributor with contracts in El Paso, Alamogordo and Holloman Air Force Base. In 1966, Rudy and Elvira bought Omega Jewelry in downtown Alamogordo. They built it into a fine jewelry store operating it for 28 years before Rudy's retirement in December of 1994. In 1966, they also opened the Red Devil Fireworks in Alamogordo and Tularosa which they owned for 30 years.
Rudy was one of the founding charter members of the Alamogordo Breakfast Lions Club which was organized in 1971. He served as president of the club during 1973 and 1974 and was an active member for the past 40 years. He was the first member of the Breakfast Lions Club to receive the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award. The Lions International recognizes outstanding individuals by honoring them with an award that is named for its founder, Melvin Jones. The Melvin Jones Fellowship Award is the highest form of recognition and embodies humanitarian ideas consistent with the nature and purpose of Lionism. The recipient of this award becomes a model because of the exemplary service to the club and the community for which it serves. During Rudy's 40 years as active member, he received three International Lions awards. He was well known among many state and international chapters of the Lions Clubs International.
Rudy is survived by his wife, Elvira, of 58 years; two sons Robert, of El Paso, and Rudy, of Houston, Texas; two daughters Marie Chavez, of Reno, Nev., and Gloria Cassiday and her husband, Thaddeus, of the Republic of the Marshall Islands; four grandchildren (Shannon, Selena and Matthew Chavez, and Kyle Cassiday) and three great-grandchildren.
