Gilbert Mac Smith, 89, passed away into the arms of the Lord on August 16, 2014, in Alamogordo.

His life long legacy began in Wabash, Ind., on Feb. 12, 1925, to Fern (McClintock) and Harry D. Smith. He was a devout Roman Catholic.
Shortly after graduating from high school in 1943, Gilbert enlisted in the United States Navy, where he was sent to Great Lakes for training and then assigned to a PT Boat Squadron. He participated in The Invasion of Normandy during World War 2 where Gilbert and his crew were a part of Squadron Ron 34, who ultimately guarded the US Fleet. After World War 2, he joined the U.S. Army.

He met and married Frances G. (Gallegos) Smith on June 11, 1949. They were married for 65 years.
In March of 1948, Gilbert became a staff sergeant who was in charge of the missile assembly crewmen with the First Guided Missile Battalion, headquartered at Fort Bliss, Texas. However, the missile brigade was attached to the White Sands Proving Ground. Gilbert also was deployed to Kitzingen, Germany, for three years where he was a crew chief of the warhead assembly. After serving 20 years, he retired as a Command Sgt. Major in 1963 from Fort Sill, Okla. He was a member of the Retired Chiefs Association of Holloman Air Force Base. He was employed by River Side Research and Dync Corp. from which he retired in the late 1980s. After retirement Gilbert and the love of his life traveled through the United States with their six Yorkies.
Gilbert enjoyed being with his family and friends. He frequently participated in pool leagues throughout his life. He enjoyed bowling and shared his love for it with his family. He also participated in bowling tournaments. Gilbert enjoyed all kinds of card games especially cribbage and pinochle, and he always looked forward to poker nights with close friends.

Gilbert is survived by his wife, Francis G. Smith; his sons, Thomas C. Smith, Kenneth M. Smith; his daughter-in-laws, Vicki Jo Smith, Gail Smith; his grandchildren, KaeDea Smith, Franceska Smith, Jacquelin Smith, KaMera Butler, Trey Sherrill, TiRynn Hamblin, Jennifer Denton, along with numerous great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

He was proceeded in death by his sons, Daniel R. Smith and Gregory M. Smith; his mother and father, Fern (McClintock) Smith and Harry D. Smith; his brother and sister, Donald Smith and Florence Smith.

The family will greet family and friends Wednesday, August 20, from 5-7 p.m. at the Hamilton O'Dell Funeral Home chapel. Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. at the Hamilton O'Dell Funeral Home chapel. Requiem funeral mass services will be held at Jesus and Mary Catholic church located in El Paso, Texas. Gilbert will be laid to rest with his brothers and sisters of war at Fort Bliss National Cemetery with full military honors.
