David F. "Dave" Newell, 88, a longtime resident of Alamogordo, died Wednesday, Sept. 9, 2009, in Alamogordo.

David was born Feb. 6, 1921, in St. Paul, Minn., the seventh of eight children born to Lawrence and Mabel (Raibel) Newell.
He served in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II, then became an educator teaching high school in Indiana. In 1956, he joined the Alamogordo Public School system and retired in 1983 as deputy superintendent.
He was an active member of Bethel Baptist Church, having believed Jesus Christ as his Savior. Teaching and serving others were his greatest joys.
David was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers and an infant sister.
Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Anita, of the family home; two sons, Edward Newell and his wife, Mary Jo, of Austin, Texas, and David Newell and his wife, Bonita, of Omaha, Neb.; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and his sister Betty Newell, of St. Paul.
David was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He will be greatly missed.
A memorial service will be conducted Saturday, Sept. 12, at 2:30 p.m. at Bethel Baptist Church with Pastor Ryan Bird officiating.
Military honors will be provided by the Holloman Air Force Base Steel Talons Honor Guard.
Cremation has taken place under the direction of Hamilton-O'Dell Funeral Home.
