Melvin Hightower, 80, passed away Monday, Jan. 14, 2013, surrounded by family and friends.

Melvin was born Feb. 13, 1932, in Collietown Cushman, Ark., to Daisy Osborne.
A resident of Alamogordo for nine years, Melvin is retired from the U.S. Air Force after serving 23 years as a firefighter.
Melvin and his wife, Gloria, spent many summers in Panama, where he loved to fish and visit with family and friends. Three generations of family will greatly miss him, but most of all, the love of his life, Gloria.
A loving father and grandfather, he is survived by his wife, Gloria; children Belinda Bugg, Melvin Hightower Jr. and Karla Wiersma; siblings Evelyn Kaye Roberts, Mary Allen Osborne and James Wesley Osborne; and grandchildren Jamie Crawley, Ryan Crawley, Cory Hightower, Brianna Leverette, Cameron Hightower, Alyssa Leverette, Nickolas Bugg and Ian Wiersma.
He was preceded in death by his mother Daisy Willine Osborne; Paul Osborne; and brother Lloyd Dean Hightower.
The rosary for Melvin Hightower will be recited at 9:15 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 19, 2013, at St. Jude Parish, 1404 College Ave., Alamogordo. Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated following the rosary at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 19, 2013, with Father Tom Hoffman, S.J., as celebrant.
There will be a reception following the services at the parish hall.
The Hightower family has entrusted their loved one to the care of Alamogordo Funeral Home to direct the arrangements. Cremation will take place at PCS.
