Beloved Godfrey Salazar Chavez, born to Fred and Juanita (Baca-Salazar) Chavez, is now resting in heavenly peace. He was born in Capitan, on Sept. 5, 1926.

Godfrey lived a life devoted to family, church, country and community. A very active and energetic person, he served as president of the Parish Council, Eucharistic Minister, fiesta manager and church choir member of the St. Francis de Paula Catholic Church. He especially enjoyed taking communion to the homebound.

He served as Village Trustee of Tularosa and was very involved in the Democratic Party. He served his nation in the United States Navy during World War II.
He spent his life in constant movement working on many projects and accomplishing the many goals he set. He was curious about many things and sought answers to all. He was knowledgeable in his history of New Mexico and people loved to hear his wonderful accounting of past events. He stood for justice and faith and had a love of life that was adventurous, fun and joyous.
He was married to Lola Flores Chavez for 48 years before her death in 1993.

He is survived by his loving Christine Torres, sons Tony and Ron Chavez and Tom and Ben Torres; daughters Janette (David) Bell, Anna (Ron) Walker and Kathy (Paul) Connor; grandchildren, Nicole (Antonio) Dobbins, Michelle Nessel, Rachel, Cameron Godfrey and Devin Bell, Alyssa, Jessica and Joey Chavez, Nick and Brian Oberlander, Thomas and Mattherw Torres, Krysten (Cody) Hill, Brandi (Dusty) Wright, Rylie Holland, Stephanie (Danny) Bonner and Stephen and Whitney Torres; great-grandchildren, Mike, Chad, Sydney and Alex Dobbins, Dylan and Lola Meler, Chance English, Samantha Oberlander, Lanie, Naomi, Lauren, Aiden, Rylie, Samson and Zoe Oberlander, Dylan and Haylee Hill, Landon and Brody Wright, and Knox Bonner; brothers, Frank (Lorraine) and Conrad (Sue) Chavez; and sisters, Josephine Chavez and Agnes (Keith) Dotson.
There were also many beloved cousins, nieces and nephews; all of which were very important to him.

We will miss you, loving partner, dad, grandpa, cousin and friend. You were dear and treasured.

Rosary will be recited by Liz Chavez at 7 p.m. Friday, April 11, 2014, at St. Francis de Paula Catholic Church in Tularosa. Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 12, 2014, at St. Francis de Paula Catholic Church with Father Carlos Espinoza, Celebrant.

Burial will follow at Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery.
The family will greet friends from 6-7 p.m. Friday, April 11, 2014 at the church before the Rosary.
