Passed away peacefully October 22, 2011 at Ty Watson House after a long and courageous battle with cancer. He was born July 18, 1946 the third of seven children. He leaves one brother; Frank, four sisters; Maria (Harold), Sandra (Terry), Elaine (Robert), Linda (Murray) and thirteen nieces and nephews to mourn him. He was predeceased by his parents Frank and Justina, his brother Robert and his life partner Anita Cleveland.
He was a carpenter by trade having a natural ability and gift for construction. His motto was: "If it's made of wood, I can build it." He received his Journeyman papers through the MIT (now RRCC) when he was 21.
He moved to British Columbia from his home province of Manitoba in 1993 with Anita, where they made a quiet and easy life in Port Alberni. His life and passion were in his little wooded corner of the world and his friends and neighbours who he shared his life with there. He valued people in a very special way and everyone who knew him had a story to tell. He will be remembered as a generous, wooden-headed Dutchman, who loved life.
The family would like to extend thanks to the doctors and nursing staff of the Port Alberni Medical Surgery Ward. A special thank you goes out to Dr. Wendy Johnson and all the staff at Ty Watson House for their involvement in Bill's care and support, both in the community and during his hospitalization and time at the hospice.
We have a deep regard for Larry Trentham and Gord Lidstone for their unfailing love and support. Whether it was taking Bill out on passes to watch the game at his place and live a little, or just shooting the breeze. They treated Bill with the devotion that only brothers would.
We cannot begin to thank all the people in Bill's life. We are just so awed and grateful that you were there to call him friend and be his friend. Bless you all.
His friends will be having a wake to celebrate Bill's life on November 27th, 2011 at Bill's house, starting at 2pm. In lieu of flowers please make a donation to Ty Watson House, cancer research, or a charity of your choosing.
