Vereda Maurine Knight, 84, of Altus, passed away on Friday, July 25, 2014 at her home. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Monday, July 28 at the Kincannon Memorial Chapel with Dr. Mark Haught officiating. Burial followed in the Hess Cemetery under the direction of the Kincannon Funeral Home.
Vereda Maurine Butler was born on June 10, 1930 in Elmer to Leroy "Dee" and Vesta Mae (Woolley) Butler. Her entire life was spent in Jackson County. She graduated from the Southside School in 1948. Vereda married Grover Knight on Jan. 9, 1955 at the Elmer United Methodist Church, where she was a longtime member. She worked for Southwestern Bell Telephone Company for 30 years before retiring. Vereda was a 50 year member of the Order of the Eastern Star and enjoyed attending country music gatherings at senior citizens centers around the area.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Carroll D. Butler; a sister-in-law, Opal Ruth Butler; and a grandnephew, Bobby Butler.
Survivors include her husband, Grover, of the home; a son, Grover Devon Knight of Oklahoma City; two brothers, Coy L. Butler and wife Jeanean of Elmer, and Terry L. Butler and wife Sammie of Altus; a sister-in-law, Betty Sue Morris of Charlotte, N.C.; and a host of nieces and nephews.
