Guadalupe S. Marquez, 89, of Altus, passed away early Thursday morning, June 12, 2014, at English Village Manor in Altus.
Mr. Marquez was born in Hebbronville, Texas on March 28, 1925, to Gregorio and Manuelita (Santos) Marquez. With his mother passing away when he was only two, the family moved to Benavides, Texas where he grew up and attended school. For a short time, they lived in Chicago where he worked in the steel mills, but most of his life the family worked in the Texas fields as migrant workers. On Jan. 1, 1946, he married the love of his life, Juliana Garza. She preceded him in death on Dec. 25, 2004, after nearly51 years of wonderful marriage. From 1957 until 1959, the family lived on the King Ranch and moved to southwest Oklahoma in 1962, where they lived until their deaths. A farmer and carpenter all of his life, Lupe loved his family dearly and provided for their well-being.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his step-mother, Inez Marquez; his wife, Juliana; three sons, Lupe Marquez, Jr., Ruben Marquez, Ramiro Marquez; two grandchildren, Heriberto Landa, Jr. and Cindi Hand; three brothers, Gregorio Marquez, Enrique Marquez and Gumercindo Marquez; one sister, Nicolasa Martinez; one daughter-in-law, Shirley Marquez and one son-in-law, Victor Cobos.
He is survived by eight children, Mary Jane Cobos of Altus, Roel Marquez of Frederick, Juan Marquez and wife Madge of Altus, Josefina Castillo and husband Samuel of Cordell, Francisca Hartlein and husband George of Vernon, Texas, Mario Marquez and wife Tonia of Sayre, Rose Gray and husband Bill of Blair and Luis Marquez of Cordell; one brother, Domingo Marquez and wife Elma of Freer, Texas; three sisters, Eloida Rojas of Plainview, Texas, Hilda Martinez and husband Pete of Freer, and Geraldine Gonzalez and husband Juan of Mission, Texas; 19 grandchildren with numerous great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren and many other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Monday at Lowell-Tims Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow at the Blair Cemetery under direction of Lowell-Tims Funeral Home of Altus.
The family will greet friends at Lowell-Tims Funeral Home from 6 to 7 p.m. on Sunday evening, June 15.
