Thomas Roy Helton Jr. passed Monday, November 13, 2017. Services will be Thursday, November 16, 2017, at 1PM, at the Wheeler High School Gymnasium. Burial will follow at the Gageby Cemetery in Gageby, Texas. Arrangements are made by Robertson Funeral Directors, Wheeler.

Thomas was born January 11, 1933, in Hemphill County, to Alice and Thomas Helton Sr. He attended Briscoe schools and graduated in 1952. He married Martha Ann Standlee on March 12, 1955, in New Mexico. He then went on to graduate from West Texas State University in 1956. Carroll Killingsworth contacted him about coaching and teaching in the Wheeler school system in 1957 and that is when he moved his family to Wheeler to start working. Thomas worked in the Wheeler schools for 33 years before retiring in 1991. He continued farming and loving sports until his time of death. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church and served on many boards in the Wheeler community and church.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Martha; grandson, Christopher Wells; great-grandson, Hayden Helton; parents, Tom and Alice Bell Helton; and a brother, Bill Helton.

He is survived by a daughter. Gayle Helton Lewallen and husband Terry, of Wheeler, TX; a son, Dale Helton and wife Beth, of Roanoke, TX; a son, Danny Helton and wife Toni, of Memphis, TX; a daughter, Sharon Helton Zamora and husband Larry, of Gageby, TX; a daughter, Karen Helton Little and husband Jeff, of Bedford, TX; a brother, Bob Helton, of Marble Falls, TX; a sister, Joyce Smith, of Sayre, OK; a brother, Jack Helton, of Wheeler, TX; 14 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be sent to the First United Methodist Church of Wheeler, PO Box 89, Wheeler, TX, 79096, or Retired Teachers of Wheeler County, c/o Connie Porter, 15333 FM 2473, Shamrock, TX 79079.
